‘Power Rangers: Comics Giveaway Day’ #0 offers a glimpse at the Rangers’ future - The Comic Stand

The Power Rangers, at their heart, have always been about change. To fight evil, they often morph into their iconic colored costumes and drive giant robots that transform into an even bigger robot. There’s also the changing of the guard to consider; this is a franchise that’s lasted for thirty years, and a large part of why it’s lasted that long is thanks to the ever-shifting team of Rangers. Power Rangers: Comics Giveaway Day #0 taps into that spirit with a trio of tales that feature Rangers past, present, and future.

The first story, written by Marguerite Bennett and illustrated by Andrew Lee Griffith, serves as a lead-in to the upcoming Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers relaunch. Rather than rest on past glories, Bennett has come up with a unique hook: the original MMPR team is reuniting as adults! It’s a rare occasion where a writer is making the best of both worlds, as we get to see the original team in an entirely different place. She’s even come up with some surprising new paths in life for the Rangers, with some making perfect sense and others serving as a total 180 from where you’d expect them to end up.

Griffith does his part by showcasing how the Rangers have aged over the years. It might be strange to see Zack, usually the fast-talking and free-spirited member of the group, working tirelessly as a lawyer, or Trini walking the halls of Washington, D.C. But Griffith also gets the chance to showcase some of the Rangers in their element. Billy, for example, is rarely seen outside of the Command Center, and his face is perpetually etched with worry. Joshua Jensen’s colors add to the “grown-up Ranger” vibe, taking on a slightly darker hue than some fans might expect.

If the idea of the MMPR team all grown up wasn’t exciting enough, then the next story, Power Rangers Unlimited, is sure to hook fans. If the name wasn’t enough of a giveaway, this story features a mysterious Yellow Ranger gathering every Ranger across time and space to battle a mysterious threat. Co-writers Joey Esposito and Kenny Porter described Unlimited as “tipping over the toy box” in an interview at the back of Power Rangers #0, and that description was more than apt. It also addresses an issue fans have had with the Ranger comics: other teams outside the original MMPR rarely get the spotlight.

Alessio Zonio is also up to the challenge of drawing every Power Ranger who ever lived. In the first two pages, he depicts two eras of Power Rangers, with Power Rangers in Space and Power Rangers RPM, perfectly capturing the distinct uniforms and mannerisms of each Ranger. If that wasn’t enough, Zonio also gets to draw a two-page spread that features practically every Ranger in existence. Not since the Shattered Grid storyline have I seen that many Rangers in one place, and if you’ve been a longtime fan, you’re sure to see your favorite Ranger being represented.

Finally, Paul Allor and Gustaffo Vargas bring us a story from Power Rangers: Green, the upcoming story that features Tommy Oliver in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. On the one hand, Vargas’ depiction of a post-Power Rangers world looks great, with aliens and humans hocking various wares and Tommy sporting a five o’clock shadow and greying hair. But Allor’s script feels a little too vague for my tastes. I understand setting the stage, but there’s an ebb and flow to storytelling, and this story could have used a bit more flow.

Power Rangers: Comic Giveaway Day #0 establishes the future of the Power Rangers comics with a trio of tales, each one spotlighting a different series. There’s something for Ranger fans of every stripe, and that’s a truly beautiful thing to witness as a Ranger fan myself.

Power Rangers: Comic Giveaway Day #0 will be available wherever comics are sold during Free Comic Book Day/Comics Giveaway Day.
