‘Punisher’ #3 digs into Frank Castle’s deteriorating state - The Comic Stand

If Punisher: Red Band didn’t take enough of a toll on Frank Castle, it’s made abundantly clear in his new ongoing series that he’s quite sick in the head. Punisher #3 further plumbs what is wrong with Frank, while supplying a compelling twist on the vigilante killer of killers. A somber and quieter issue, it starts to strike at what this first story arc is really about.

Punisher #3 opens with Frank pushing Microchip’s wheelchair in Mercy General Hospital. A young boy is quite sick, but can’t get treatment due to a shooting that has taken the focus of the doctors away from him. That shooter soon storms the hospital, where Frank makes short work of him. The innocent boy, however, doesn’t make it, as writer Ben Percy makes it clear that sometimes, a guy like Punisher is necessary to save innocent lives.

From there, the story checks in on Jigsaw, who is serving up a dinner of surprises to Tombstone’s most loyal mob bosses. Jose Luis Soares continues to do wonders with the face-tear-off trick, making it look gruesome and horrific. This leads to a major move by Jigsaw, and that ties into the reporter subplot later in the issue. The plot is moving forward.

A three-page montage of vigilante justice reminds us of Punisher’s ability to clean up the streets with low-level criminals. Pimps, robbers, and the like are short work for Frank. He seems solemn, however, and needs pills to keep going. That latter detail matters a lot later in the issue, with a key scene of heavy exposition from Microchip. The revelation and new info lead to a rather shocking cliffhanger page that should have everyone clamoring for the next issue.

Thankfully, Microchip’s explanation helps convey why Frank is so forlorn and expressionless. It’s a bit late to be getting this twist, and it’ll be interesting to see how Frank survives it. More importantly, one can assume Percy is doing some rework of the character that could be long-lasting. That’s enticing in an age where Punisher really doesn’t fit with our daily political cycles of shootings and assassination attempts.

Punisher #3 slows things down in a way that ultimately strengthens the story, digging into Frank Castle’s deteriorating state while pushing the plot forward with meaningful developments. Ben Percy leans into a more introspective take on the character, supported by grim, effective visuals from Jose Luis Soares. The issue lands its biggest moments late, but they reframe what this run is aiming for and leave a strong impression heading into the next chapter.
